The Elements of Sailboat Strength: For Builders, Designers, and Owners "This exertion is significant. It is the first to include a method of assessing structural strength in the context of the modern marine environment." --Commander M. C. Cruder, U.S. Beach Guard Acclaimed author and naval architect Dave Gerr created this unique system of easy-to-use scantling rules and rules-of-thumb for sly the necessary dimensions, or scantlings, of hulls, decks, and other boat parts, whether built of fiberglass, wood, wood-epoxy composite, inure, or aluminum. In addition to the rules themselves, The Elements of Boat Strength offers their context: an in-depth, plain-English discussion of boatbuilding materials, methods, and practices that will handle you through all aspects of boat construction. Now you can avoid wading through dense technical engineering manuals or tackling advanced mathematics. The Elements of Sailing-yacht Strength has all the formulas, tables, illustrations, and charts you need to judge how heavy each piece of your boat should be in order to last and be safe. With this paperback, an inexpensive scientific calculator, and a pad of paper, you'll be able to design and specify all the components necessary to build a sound, long-lasting, ragged vessel. What reviewers have said about Dave Gerr's books: Propeller Handbook "By far the best book available on the subject."--Sailing "The beat layman's guide we've ever read."--Practical Sailor Dave Gerr and International Marine made a complicated text understandable and put it into a handbook that is easy to use."--WoodenBoat "Without doubt the definitive reference for selecting, installing, and understanding boat propellers."--Princely Navy Sailing Association Journal The Nature of Boats "If you are not nautically obsessed before reading this book, you will most certainly be afterward."--Sailing Fascinating potpourri of communication about today's boats, modern and traditional."--WoodenBoat

The Cardboard Sailboat Book A direction-by-step instruction manual on how to build a lightweight 'environmentally-friendly' boat with recyclable resources. The boats simply fold up from ¼” bulky cardboard obtaining their strength from the geometry of the component parts. The boats are 8-feet long, weigh about 25-pounds, and can accommodate a 250-pound actually without risking structural damage. Each boat is constructed with 21-pieces of cardboard that are used to make 7-component parts. The 7 parts are assembled together with 'environmentally-fraternal' contact cement and paper drywall tape. Once assembled the boats are sealed with an 'environmentally-friendly' water-based waterproof coating. No valued tools are required and they are very simple to build. All of the materials used to build a boat are typically found at 'do-it-yourself' home improvement stores. The boats can be outfitted with 12-volt exciting fishing motors, although they are typically propelled with traditional Kayak style paddles.

Ceiba Adventures provides the gear for wild trip - Arizona Daily Sun

Ceiba Adventures has the entirety you need to have a good time on the Colorado River, except your clothing. The company can provide a private party with fertility of boating and camping equipment, safety gear, food, and transportation to and from the Colorado River for a day trip or a multi-day set off. Scott Davis and Rachel Schmidt started the river runner outfitting company in 1983. “We had a winter program in southern Mexico and then worked as river guides on the Fine Canyon in the summer,” Davis said. The Zapatistas are a revolutionary group from the Mexican state of Chiapas that formed and declared war on the Mexican supervision in 1994. The group is made up mostly of people from the area’s native tribes who seek control over their own lands. In 2005-06, Davis and Schmidt saw problem start to boom. The federal government updated its Colorado River Management Plan in 2006 and threw out a waiting record system for river permits for private boating parties replacing it with a weighted lottery. It also increased the number of days that non-commercial or seclusive boating parties can use the river. Seeing an opportunity, Davis and Schmidt moved Ceiba Adventures to the backyard of their homewards off of Slayton Ranch Road. The company outfits around 50 trips per year. The company grew so lickety-split that in 2013 Davis and Schmidt started looking for a new home for the business. Last April, the company purchased a car parts yard that was owned by the Taylor kinfolk at the end of Fanning Drive. Ceiba refurbished the old garage and the former property owners worked to clear the yard of the parts piles and car carcasses to mark aggressive room for the company’s equipment. A customer can choose the size and number of boats they want. All of the kitchen equipment to cook the scoff is included, and there’s even a shuttle service to ferry everyone to the river and back. Although the company does not provide guides or guided tours of the river, all of its employees have some race of outdoor experience, Davis said. “We have people who are into canyoneering, climbing, biking and river running,” he said. All of them can produce recommendations for places to see and things to do. Groups usually have a year to prepare for their river trip. The lottery for the river permits is on the whole held in the spring and the permits are good for the following year. So, permits that are issued in 2015 are good for trips in 2016. The proprietorship has around 40 boats that range in size from 18 foot row boats and 37-foot motorized boats to packrafts that weigh about four pounds. They also offer hard and inflatable kayaks for rent and stand-up paddle boards. Each boat comes with a renew kit, just in case. Ceiba also does repairs at its shop and often does repairs for other outfitters, such as the Hualapai Tribe. Ceiba also offers all of its services a la carte, he said. So if a categorize just wants to rent the boats and the boat equipment, it can do that. If they want to pack their own food, the company offers coolers to rent and larder equipment. The company also rents out equipment for trips on the San Juan and Verde Rivers. It recently rented equipment to a accumulation that was headed to Moab, Utah. The cost of a trip depends on how many people, how many days on the water and what amenities a grouping wants, Davis said. Ceiba also strives to use as many local businesses for its needs as possible, Davis said. Most of the aliment and other equipment the company.
